Modern culture is something to behold. Let’s face it, if you’re talking to a traditionalist, nothing will beat the past. If you’re talking to a futurist, nothing beats the future. That’s why I think any discussion of today’s culture is essentially subjective. You get out what you put in. In other words, if you have any sort of prejudice, or some sort of ideology, you will see what you want to see.
This is the problem with analysing certain cultural phenomenon like fuck dates, or same sex marriage, or abortion on demand, and similar social issues. The truth is, you have to look at culture as flowing from economic, social and political factors. Otherwise, it’s too easy to look at culture as some sort of essence that’s just floating out there and it can be sliced and diced according to certain principles which, upon further inspection, turns out to be quite subjective.
We have evolved as a culture to this stage. I mean, there are more traditional societies that tend to look at things as black and white. Unfortunately, in the postmodern American culture, we can’t do that. If you try to do that, people would think that you’re either corny, outdated, or you have an agenda. On the other hand, the futurists also have their jobs cut out for them because the future never really pans out the way we want it to. So you’re really damned if you do and damned if you don’t.
What does this all have to do with fuck dates? Well, you have to understand that people’s mentalities are a product of their time. When you go out on fuck dates or you go on websites where fuck dates are arranged, a lot of those attitudes filter in to what you’re trying to do. Sure, you’re just trying to get laid. Sure, you’re just trying to hook up anonymously online. But a lot of these postmodern attitudes will crop up and you have to be prepared for it. Modern culture, whether sexual, economic or financial, all flow together.
It’s really important to understand the postmodern mind set. The postmodern mind set is pretty straightforward: there are no rules. I know it’s scary for traditionalists. I know it’s scary for people who essentially just inherited their parent’s values without challenging them. It’s also quite optimistic for people who are futurists to think that they can make the new future in the present. Unfortunately, the truth probably lies in between these two extremes.
When you’re trying to fuck for free, you would realize that there are certain baseline values that you should stick to. First of all, you shouldn’t lie. You shouldn’t endanger your partner by being irresponsible and playing with unsafe sex. You should also pay respect to each other. None of these principles are revolutionary and none of them, I would say in this day and age, are all so traditionalistic that they can be easily dismissed as corny and outdated. They still matter. And I highly suspect that they will continue to matter a long time into the future.
